what is a verified carbon credit? By the end you will know how it is defined, why verification matters, and how systems like Verra’s VCS give credits integrity. This video answers those questions plainly and clearly.
A verified carbon credit is a unit that represents a reduction or removal of one tonne of carbon dioxide equivalent that has been confirmed by a third‑party verifier. Third‑party verification ensures the emission benefit is real and independently confirmed.
Verified carbon credits are issued only after a project has passed a rigorous process including methodologies, audits and registry listing. This ensures the credit is unique, traceable, and cannot be double counted.
The Verified Carbon Standard, managed by Verra, is one major program that issues verified carbon credits called Verified Carbon Units, or VCUs. Each VCU equals one tonne of CO₂ equivalent removed or reduced.
Verra requires that projects follow approved methodologies, undergo independent validation and verification by a VVB, and are reviewed and tracked in a public registry before issuing a VCU.
A verified carbon credit unit must carry a unique identifier in a registry, guaranteeing its individuality and enabling tracking through its lifecycle.
How does verification add value? Verification confirms reductions are additional, not claimed elsewhere, measured with conservative assumptions, and permanent under defined durations. This builds confidence in the credit’s integrity.
Verified credits must originate from projects that are monitored over time, ensuring the claimed greenhouse gas reductions are maintained and can withstand scrutiny.
Retirement means the credit is taken out of circulation after use as an offset, preventing reuse or double counting—and formalizing its role in offsetting emissions.
Beyond climate impact, some programs like Verra’s allow project labels that reflect community benefits, biodiversity, or gender inclusion. These labels can be applied to VCUs under defined criteria.
Who oversees the verification? Independent validation/verification bodies (VVBs) assess project design and results, and Verra staff further review to uphold rigorous standards.
All VCU issuance and retirements are recorded publicly in Verra’s registry. This transparency enables buyers and stakeholders to track the credits’ full history.
Why choose verified over unverified credits? Verified credits reduce risk of greenwash by ensuring reductions are independently confirmed, publicly traceable, and methodologically robust.
Evertreen offers VERRA‑verified CO₂ offsets by planting GPS‑geolocated trees in projects across Colombia, Brazil and Madagascar, ensuring real, traceable climate outcomes.
Evertreen monitors forests via satellite and delivers updates through photos, videos and satellite imagery, giving customers transparent visibility on tree planting progress and carbon impact.
Customers of Evertreen receive a public company profile showing their branded forest and CO₂ offset, plus personalised certificates with GPS coordinates for gifted trees.
Tree planting through Evertreen starts from about £1 per tree, and as of September 2026 Evertreen reports over 3.7 million trees planted and over 97,000 tonnes of CO₂ absorbed.
Trust in verified carbon credits comes from third‑party verification, transparent registries, standard‑based methodologies and traceability through unique IDs and monitoring.

Independent auditors play a key role in verified carbon credit projects, as they assess project documentation, review data, and visit project sites to confirm adherence to approved methodologies and standards.
What documentation does a buyer receive with a verified carbon credit? Buyers get access to official records in the registry, detailing the origin, unique credit ID, verification report, and retirement status.
