Verra Carbon Credits for Business
Retire verified Verra (Verified Carbon Standard) credits from named, high-integrity projects to compensate your company's measured emissions. Evertreen sources VCS credits and retires them on your behalf as an intermediary — we do not own or operate the projects. One credit (a Verified Carbon Unit, or VCU) = one tonne of CO₂e (an independently verified estimate), and credits complement, not replace, cutting your own emissions.

How a Verra (VCS) carbon credit works
Verra, Gold Standard and RECs — what's the difference?
Verra's Verified Carbon Standard (VCS) is the world's most-used carbon-crediting programme, spanning forest conservation (REDD+), blue carbon, reforestation and engineered removals. Gold Standard is another leading carbon standard (often clean cooking, water and reforestation) — see our Gold Standard carbon credits. A Renewable Energy Certificate (REC) is a different instrument entirely — one MWh of renewable electricity for market-based Scope 2 reporting — see Renewable Energy Certificates. Carbon credits and RECs are not interchangeable, and Evertreen keeps them separate.
What to look for in a high-quality Verra project
- VCS registration + an approved methodology, with a unique project ID you can look up on the Verra Registry.
- Independent verification and, ideally, a co-benefit label (CCB or SD VISta) and an independent rating (BeZero, Sylvera, Calyx Global).
- Unique serial + registry retirement — each VCU is retired once on the Verra Registry, so it can't be double-counted.
- Named, transparent developer and real, disclosed co-benefits (biodiversity, community, SDGs).
- Honest figures. Older REDD+ (avoided-deforestation) projects are moving to Verra's new consolidated methodology (VM0048), which is expected to reduce creditable volumes — so we present volumes as estimates and confirm current vintage and standing before purchase.
How Evertreen vets these projects
Verra's voluntary market — especially REDD+ — has faced legitimate scrutiny over baselines, permanence and, in some cases, community land rights. We don't hide that. Each project page discloses the relevant context — independent ratings, the VM0048 methodology transition, permanence considerations and any land-rights findings — and Evertreen only sources credits that are in good standing on the Verra Registry, sharing a project's current status and documentation before any purchase. Credits are independently verified estimates and complement, not replace, cutting your own emissions.

Frequently asked questions
What is a Verra (VCS) carbon credit?
A Verified Carbon Unit (VCU) issued under Verra's Verified Carbon Standard represents one tonne of CO₂e reduced or removed, independently verified to an approved methodology. Retiring it lets your company compensate a measured quantity of emissions.
How is Verra different from Gold Standard?
Both are leading carbon-crediting standards. Verra's VCS is the most widely used and covers REDD+, blue carbon, reforestation and removals; Gold Standard is strong in clean cooking, water and reforestation. They are separate registries; a credit is retired once on its own standard's registry.
Is REDD+ reliable?
REDD+ (avoided deforestation) protects standing forest and delivers real biodiversity and community benefits, but its baselines have been criticised and Verra has revised its methodology (VM0048), which is expected to reduce creditable volumes on older projects. We present volumes as estimates, disclose project-level context, and recommend confirming current vintage and standing before purchase.
How do you prevent double counting?
Each VCU has a unique serial number and is retired once on the Verra Registry when claimed, so the same tonne can't be sold or counted twice.
Does Evertreen own these projects?
No. Evertreen is an intermediary that sources credits from named, vetted projects and retires them on your behalf.
How do I buy and retire credits?
Tell us the tonnes of CO₂e you need to compensate and which type of project you prefer, and we'll source and retire verified Verra credits for you with the retirement documentation.
