What Vichada Reforestation is
The Vichada Climate Reforestation project, by Forest Finest Colombia (Forest Finance Group), has planted 21,413 hectares and holds a further 11,994 hectares of natural savanna and riparian forest under conservation, within a 106,522-hectare project area in Colombia's Orinoquia. The planting is principally acacia, eucalyptus and pine on land previously used for cattle ranging — it is timber production alongside carbon sequestration, not restoration of native savanna, and we would rather say so than let the word “restoration” do work it has not earned. It supports 110 threatened species through habitat creation, has created 381 local jobs (most paid above the regional minimum wage), reduces soil erosion, improves water quality, and builds fire-resilience in a region increasingly hit by flooding and drought — combining large-scale reforestation with protection of riparian vegetation along major waterways.
