Reforestation in Haiti

Discover Evertreen’s Haiti Reforestation Project, aimed at restoring Haiti's forests, enhancing biodiversity, and promoting sustainable practices.

Haiti, a country rich in culture and natural beauty, has faced significant deforestation over the years due to agriculture, charcoal production, and environmental degradation. Once home to vast forests, the nation has seen its tree cover drastically reduced, leading to soil erosion, loss of biodiversity, and increased vulnerability to natural disasters such as floods and hurricanes.

This page highlights the tree species planted in Haiti as part of our reforestation efforts, their environmental benefits, and their role in restoring the country’s fragile ecosystem.

Why Plant Trees in Haiti?

Haiti’s forests are essential for:

- Soil Protection: Trees prevent soil erosion, a major issue in Haiti due to deforestation and heavy rainfall.

- Climate Resilience: Reforestation helps mitigate the impact of hurricanes and extreme weather events by stabilizing landscapes.

- Biodiversity Conservation: Trees provide critical habitats for native wildlife and support ecosystem restoration.

- Water Security: Forests play a crucial role in replenishing groundwater and preventing landslides.

- Sustainable Livelihoods: Reforestation promotes agroforestry and sustainable land management, benefiting local communities.

Our Tree Planting Efforts in Haiti
Our projects focus on planting native and climate-resilient tree species to restore Haiti’s forests and improve ecological balance. Here are some of the species we plant:

- Moringa (Moringa oleifera)
A fast-growing tree known for its nutritional and medicinal properties. It enhances soil fertility and provides sustainable food sources for communities.

- Mahogany (Swietenia mahagoni)
A valuable hardwood species that supports long-term forest recovery. It helps restore natural ecosystems and prevent desertification.

- Breadfruit (Artocarpus altilis)
A fruit-bearing tree that provides a reliable food source while contributing to food security and reforestation efforts.

- Mango (Mangifera indica)
A resilient tree that not only produces fruit but also aids in soil stabilization and supports biodiversity by attracting pollinators and wildlife.

Tree Planting Process

We collaborate with local organizations, environmental experts, and community members to ensure a sustainable reforestation approach:

- Site Selection: Identifying degraded lands and deforested areas in need of restoration.
- Species Matching: Selecting native tree species that thrive in Haiti’s climate.
- Sustainable Practices: Implementing planting methods that ensure long-term survival and growth.
- Monitoring & Maintenance: Conducting regular checks to support healthy forest development.

By supporting reforestation in Haiti, you contribute to:

- Restoring Ecosystems: Helping reverse deforestation and regenerate natural habitats.
- Protecting Communities: Reducing risks of landslides, floods, and soil degradation.
- Strengthening Local Livelihoods: Supporting sustainable farming and economic opportunities.
- Fighting Climate Change: Offsetting carbon emissions and promoting environmental resilience.
- Through these efforts, we aim to restore Haiti’s forests and create a more sustainable future for both people and nature.
