In northern Zimbabwe, along the shores of Lake Kariba, a large-scale forest conservation effort is transforming both landscapes and lives. The Kariba REDD+ Project spans a vital region of dry forest and savanna, part of the Zambezi Valley ecosystem—an area rich in biodiversity but historically threatened by poverty-driven deforestation, unsustainable farming, and fuelwood harvesting.

Through this certified carbon offsetting initiative, more than 196 million metric tons of CO₂ are projected to be avoided over 30 years. But the project’s impact goes far beyond emissions reduction. It empowers local communities with sustainable alternatives to deforestation—such as improved agriculture, beekeeping, fire management, and fuelwood plantations—helping residents meet their needs while protecting the forest.
At the heart of the initiative is a strong commitment to equity and long-term sustainability. A portion of the project’s carbon revenue is reinvested through the Community and Project Sustainability Fund, which supports education, healthcare, clean water, and income-generating activities for vulnerable groups, including women and youth. This ensures that the people who live within and around these forests become their most effective stewards.
The Kariba REDD+ Project is a verified AFOLU (Agriculture, Forestry, and Other Land Use) carbon offset initiative, developed under international standards such as VERRA, guaranteeing transparency, credibility, and measurable impact. Evertreen acts as an intermediary, enabling individuals and companies to support and fund activities within this certified framework.
In a region where climate resilience, economic opportunity, and conservation must go hand in hand, the Kariba initiative shows what’s possible when local knowledge and international support unite. By protecting Zimbabwe’s forests, this project is helping to secure a healthier climate and a more hopeful future—for both nature and the communities that depend on it.
