The Deforestation Crisis in Northern Maine

Maine is one of the most forested states in the United States, yet its forests face growing pressures from decades of intensive logging, land conversion, and the accelerating impacts of climate change. The state's iconic northern forests, home to towering spruce, fir, and maple, are experiencing widespread degradation that threatens biodiversity, water quality, and the rural communities whose identity and economy are deeply rooted in the land. Through targeted reforestation initiatives, meaningful steps are being taken to restore degraded forestland, protect Maine's extraordinary natural heritage, and build long-term resilience for the ecosystems and communities that depend on healthy forests.

 

 

Land Degradation and Soil Loss
Decades of clear-cutting and intensive timber harvesting have left significant areas of northern Maine's forest landscape fragmented and degraded. Without adequate tree cover to protect the soil, heavy snowmelt and seasonal rains accelerate erosion, strip away organic matter, and reduce the land's ability to support healthy forest regeneration. This degradation weakens the foundation of Maine's forest ecosystem, making natural recovery slower and less certain. Restoring tree cover is essential to rebuilding soil health and giving native species the conditions they need to thrive.

Climate Vulnerability
Maine is experiencing measurable shifts in its climate, including warmer winters, altered precipitation patterns, and more frequent storm events. These changes put additional stress on already degraded forest areas, slowing natural regeneration and increasing vulnerability to pest outbreaks, invasive species, and wildfire. Trees are central to climate regulation at a local level. They moderate temperatures, retain moisture in the soil, protect watersheds, and support the ecological balance that keeps Maine's forests productive and resilient. Restoring them is one of the most effective responses to the pressures climate change places on the landscape.

Project Goals
Evertreen focuses on restoring native forest cover across degraded and harvested land. The aim is not simply to increase tree numbers, but to rebuild diverse, structurally complex forests that can support wildlife, protect water resources, and withstand the pressures of a changing climate. Species selection prioritizes natives well suited to Maine's cold climate and varied soils, including red spruce, balsam fir, sugar maple, yellow birch, and eastern white pine — trees that have shaped Maine's landscape for centuries and remain the foundation of its forest identity.Evertreen supports these efforts by connecting individuals and companies with active planting initiatives on the ground, directing resources toward the areas where restoration can deliver the greatest long-term impact.
