In Mai Ndombe Province, western Democratic Republic of Congo, 248,956 hectares of intact Congo Basin rainforest stand on the western shore of Lake Mai Ndombe. Before the Mai Ndombe REDD+ Project began in 2011, this forest had been allocated for industrial logging, with slash-and-burn agriculture and charcoal production set to follow.

When you protect a tree in DR Congo through Evertreen, your contribution goes directly to the Mai Ndombe REDD+ Project, operated by Wildlife Works Carbon and its DR Congo subsidiary ERA Congo under a Carbon Rights Agreement signed with the Government of the DRC.

Your trees fund three areas of work:

Forest protection and wildlife monitoring. Eco-guards employed and trained by the project monitor 248,956 hectares of intact rainforest. Thirty permanent biodiversity transects run across five forest strata, walked each year by a dedicated team. In 2022, the team covered 70.9 kilometres on foot and recorded 1,023 wildlife encounters across 36 species.

Community development. In 2022, the project completed five new schools, drilled or repaired 21 water wells serving more than 27,000 community members, and deployed five mobile clinics. When an Mpox outbreak hit 20 villages inside the concession, the project mobilised and paid 11 doctors and 81 nurses; the project reports that 1,211 of 1,268 cases identified were cured. The project employs 2,323 people in full-time-equivalent work, 39 percent of whom are women.

Sustainable agriculture. Slash-and-burn agriculture is one of the main drivers of forest loss in the region. By the end of 2022, the project had two operating agriculture villages, 26 active demonstration gardens, and reported that 51 percent of households had adopted new farming methods. Two new fishponds in Lobalu and Nkundo were stocked with Nile tilapia and catfish to address malnutrition.

The project sits inside the only range on Earth where bonobos live in the wild, south of the Congo River. Both bonobos and African forest elephants were directly photographed by camera traps inside the project area during the 2022 monitoring period, alongside the giant ground pangolin, leopard, and three other IUCN-listed threatened species.

The project is registered to Verra VCS Project 934 under methodology VM0009, co-certified to the Climate, Community and Biodiversity Standards (CCB) v2.0 at Gold Level for Climate and Biodiversity, and most recently verified by Earthood Services Limited in February 2024 for the 2021 monitoring period (2,904,200 VCUs).

Every tree protected here keeps a piece of one of the most important rainforests left on Earth standing. Protect trees in DR Congo through Evertreen.

Frequently asked questions

Why does protecting Mai Ndombe matter?

The project sits inside the only range on Earth where the bonobo lives in the wild, and inside the second-largest intact rainforest system on the planet. The 2022 monitoring confirmed seven IUCN-listed threatened species in the project area, including bonobos and Critically Endangered forest elephants. Protecting this 248,956-hectare block keeps habitat connected, carbon stored, and 108,000 community members supported.

Who owns and operates the project?

The project is operated by Wildlife Works Carbon LLC, headquartered in California, through its wholly owned DR Congo subsidiary ERA Congo. Evertreen is the platform through which you support the project. Evertreen does not own or operate the project directly.

Can businesses use this project for ESG or CSR reporting?

Yes. The project is registered with Verra and co-certified to CCB v2.0 at Gold Level. Independent verification reports are publicly available on the Verra registry, which makes the project a recognised choice for ESG and CSR portfolios that require third-party-verified climate and biodiversity outcomes.

Can I gift forest protection in the Democratic Republic of Congo? Yes. Evertreen offers digital gift certificates that can be redeemed for trees in DR Congo or in any of the 35+ countries where Evertreen supports projects.
